Dear Community Member,
Chattanooga C.A.R.E.S, Inc. (Council on AIDS Resources, Education, and Support) is now doing business as Cempa Community Care. Cempa is an old English root word for Champion. As Cempa Community Care we will continue to be champions for our patients and community. We feel this not only reflects the work of our staff and their impact in the community, but also the empowerment we hope each person who walks through our doors will feel. We want everyone to be champions, not only of their own healthcare, but also their lives.
As many of you know, Chattanooga C.A.R.E.S, Inc. like many HIV service organizations, have gone through a lot of change in the decades since the beginning of the AIDS crisis. This is even more prevalent when considering that using the term AIDS as a blanket term in the field of HIV is out-of-date. This fact, along with the calling to take on additional challenges in our community, such as Hepatitis C and sexually transmitted infections, is why the Board of Directors decided that the Chattanooga C.A.R.E.S, Inc. brand needed to evolve with the mission and vision.
Since my time here as CEO, we as a staff, board, and organization have gone through tremendous ups-and-downs. It is my belief that the struggles we endured gave us the strength to bind together as a team, accomplish many difficult tasks, and laid the groundwork for a new brand to emerge that would make a lasting impact on our community.
Additionally, we have formed the Chattanooga C.A.R.E.S. Foundation, Inc. as a 509(a)(3) to help carry out the purpose of Cempa Community Care. Our organization has an incredible heritage and will remain strongly held in its roots. Those who bravely fought the battle against HIV before us will always be revered.
With a new name comes many challenges and transitions. However, our core mission to improve the health and well-being of the people and communities that we serve remains the same. We ask that during this change you help spread the word about our new name and be patient as we shift over the next few months to launch our new brand.
Shannon Stephenson, CEO
